Who I'm Reading

November 8th, 2009

Where else can you read about Charles Dickens, zombies taking over our minds, and yoga all in one place? Nowhere but here. That’s the Archives of Our Lives™ promise.

Poor Kyle and I utilised this weekend to engage in marriage-strengthening activities like catching the latest 3-D movie playing.

Ebeneezer ScroogeImage from here.

(We saw A Christmas Carol, and I totally recommend it.  Though I will warn you that if you’ve ever been to England, seeing this movie will ignite a burning desire to return; and if you’ve never been to England, seeing this movie will make you weep and wail and gnash your teeth in a most anxious manner, for fear that you might never get to see it before you die.  Also, Colin Firth had a part in the animated film, and the character whose voice he plays actually looks like Colin Firth.  It was bizarre in a way that only a 3-D movie can be.  Added to the fact that the movie was set in the late 1800s, and Colin Firth’s character had enormous 3-D sideburns, it was enough to make me slip into Pride and Prejudice mode.  I very nearly exclaimed aloud, “Mr. Dahcy!” Everything I thought I knew about life came into question, and things were quite topsy-turvy for a while there.  Must’ve been the wonky glasses.  At any rate, I’m better now.)

(I should note that even though it’s an animated movie, some parts were actually quite terrifying.  At one point I leaned over to Poor Kyle and whispered I don’t think I would really recommend it for young kids.  But then, I’m not a parent, so what do I know?)

Anyway, that was the real highlight of our weekend.

Despite really enjoying the movie, I must say that 3-D movies are never as good as I’m hoping they’ll be.  Not even these new 3-D movies that are supposed to be the cat’s meow of the cinema experience quite measure up to their hype.  They actually sort of give me a headache from messing with my eyes so much.  There’s been a lot of speculation that within a few short years, 3-D technology will be the only way people will watch TV at home, and might I just take this opportunity to announce that I OBJECT?! The whole point of watching movies or television programmes is to escape into a different world.  When I sit down to watch a show, I want to forget about all the other things I should be doing, and just relax for an hour or two—I don’t want to watch a show so realistic that I can’t separate it from reality.  Where’s the escapism in that, I ask you?  Where?  Moreover, it makes me feel mildly uncomfortable to think of us all sitting in front of the TV with enormous goggles on, lost in our own little worlds, completely zoned out and out of tune with the real reality of our lives…very zombie-esque.

In the end, it always comes down to zombies, doesn’t it?

3-D Awesome.

Anyway, the movie was good.  The quality time was good.  And I’m going to start doing yoga.

How was your weekend?

We almost took our children…all five…under 4years of age so I must thank you for saving our lives with this review. I must say that you should have a column somewhere where more people can see your writing.

I’m pretty sure you saw what my weekend consisted of..pure Bliss as in Blissfest:-)

adam said to tell you that the better phrase would have been “the cats pajamas”.

I am so excited to see this movie, I have since I saw a commercial for it on Wednesday. (I had to watch greys without tivo… first time I’ve watched commercials in ages!)

it does look good, i’ll have to see. glad to know its not for my 3 year old, even though i would have guessed by the preview anyways. I love that the glasses are better then the past 3d glasses with the one red and one blue lens.

I am a lover of the 3-D movies but even I will protest if they try making it a permanent thing for both and television. I like it yes, but do I want to put the 3-D glasses over my glasses every time I want to be a coach potato? No, no I don’t. Oh, and yes, it always comes down to zombies….

I hope you’ll love yoga. It took me a while, but I love it. A pointer I will give and have been given: don’t try to clear your mind completely, that’s impossible. Just try to notice the thoughts that come into your mind and not dwell on them. Just notice them, and watch them go.

I saw A Christmas Carol with a friend this weekend as well. I really liked it, and agree with you that it’s not for small kids. I don’t think I have ever seen a 3D movie, so I was pretty impressed. It also kind of gave me a headache, because we sat in the front row.

Yay for yoga! It is my all time favorite exercise. Are you going video style or is there a studio up in mayberry?

I’m glad you enjoyed the movie. I’d like to see it but have a feeling I’ll be waiting until Christmas break.
And yoga is good. I’d like to start up again. Maybe, possibly, hopefully tomorrow.

Oh Im glad its good. Sometimes Jim Carrey makes me want to rip out my hair. I love him in Dumb and Dumber but some of his movies are over the top. Yoga huh? Sounds delightful

The movie was great, and as a mother who, unkowingly, took her two year old, I wouldn’t reccomend it for young kiddos. He was ok, but he sat on my lap for most of the show. I’m with you on the whole disappoinment with the 3D movies thing. And, I love yoga! These days, my repetoire is quite limited, but I still love it!

i did yoga once…i couldnt believe how hard it was. I did it at a gym with my sister in law and at one point the instructor came over to “see if we were okay”. Apparently it was that obvious that we were in pain.

Good Luck.

Oh I didn’t realize that movie was out yet…it’s not even thanksgiving! haha. Yoga is something I don’t think I will ever be able to do!! It looks way to hard! But good luck with it! I saw Kelly Clarkson at the state fair this weekend! She was amazing!!

Glad to get a recommendation on that movie, I wasn’t sure how it was going to be. I do think it might be a little too much for my “scardy cat” 5 yr old!

I think movies with the hubby are definitely a marriage strengthening activity :)

Let me know how you like yoga. I do pilates, but have never tried yoga. Are you doing the Wii yoga?
We will have to go see that movie now that you recommended it. Jeff and I haven’t been to a movie with just the 2 of us for a long time.
Did you also hear how much ours kids adore Kyle? The love him, want to be the one to sit closest to him, watch his every move. He is a kid magnet. I am going to say it again, they adore Kyle.
