A Medley of Good

Today, I am channeling my inner Busy Bee Lauren.  If you have not yet scurried over to meet Busy Bee Lauren, you really should—she’s a cheerful, uplifting, and light-heartedly entertaining blogger.  About once a week or so, Lauren writes an entire post about things that are making her happy.  It’s a cheerful notion, and often she carries on and on with her tidings of great joy, leaving me feeling refreshed and rejuvenated that there is, indeed, still a semblance of good in the world.

After a solid several weeks of bad news—including poo-poor grades on midterms and papers, a pregnancy rumour, and one very wrecked Tamra Camry—a “semblance of good” post sounds like just the sort of thing I need this week.  So…

What is Making Me Happy This Week?

1.   A grade I deserve.  Finally. And on a midterm, no less.  Thank goodness—I was really starting to worry about my capacity to learn.

A+!!A+!!!  Take THAT, other lousy English professor!

photo-222Although, it looks like she did the math wrong and originally gave me a 19.5 out of 20.  {I scratch off white-out on a regular basis.  There’s no hiding from me.}  Oh well.  19/20 is still 95%, and that is a grade with which I can live.

2.  I’m still digging the dark. In fact, I like it so much, I’m planning on returning tomorrow to have the hair lady darken up some of the blonde in front.  I want it to be…more dark.

photo-213Seriously.  Embracing the natural is the best thing I have done for my self-esteem since I got the contact lenses (thanks Mom and Dad!) in seventh grade (Grade 7, Canadians).

Dark Curls2I got my bangs cut, too.

3.  The thaw has come. For now, at least.  It’s glorious.

picture-11Temperatures in the 30s, even the 40s?  Not bad at all.  Tomorrow I might even go jogging to commemorate the occasion.

4.  It’s the beginning of a new month—and a new budget.

coupon systemI’m trying to learn how to work the system with coupons.  When I was a little girl, and my mom used coupons, I was always horribly embarrassed about it.  Now?  Loud and proud, baby. Loud and proud.

I did my grocery shopping today (because most grocers in Southern Alberta offer 10-15% off total purchases* on the first Tuesday of each month).  That, combined with other sales, and the occasional coupon that actually applies to my life, makes for a good day of deals.  I spent $91 and saved $40; today’s groceries ought to get me through at least a week and a half, if not two weeks, at which point I’ll need to do a little rejuvenating of the fridge.  I try really hard to save money.  Honest.  I’m a hard tryer.

5.  It’s the beginning of the month—and a new idea.

Fun MoneyThis “fun money” envelope lives clipped to our fridge, and I’ve had fun just looking at it the past couple of days—there’s a lot of hope in a “fun money” envelope at the beginning of a month.

Poor Kyle and I have decided that, in addition to taking out all the cash for our groceries at the first of the month—and not spending beyond that—we’re going to give ourselves a “fun” allowance.  We are lucky to be able to budget for this; I know a lot of people might not have that chance.  At any rate, we’re keeping it fairly moderate (for us), allowing ourselves $200/month for dates or excursions.  How we spend it is totally up to us as a couple:  If we want to go to the Burger Baron ten times in a month, fine.  If we want to save it up for three months and have a weekend getaway, fine.  If we want four nice-ish dinner/dates a month, fine.  It’s fun money.

Being the first month we’re trying this, I’m anxious to see how it will work.  Rest assured, I’ll keep you posted.

Anyway, that’s all I’ve got for today.  Lauren can usually come up with 20 things that she’s happy about, but, given the circumstances, I think I’m doing fine with five.  And you know what?  Lauren might be on to something with these happy-happy-joy-joy posts of hers.  I really do feel better.

Is there anything making you happy today?

*Total of purchases must be $50 before GST.  There’s always a catch.

A+ are SUPER! Yeah for you. I am really liking your dark look.

While I don’t have fun money, I’m definitely looking forward to when I do. Lucky you.

When I started my FOF’s, it was things that made me happy/laugh/smile. I haven’t done one that way in a while, you’ve inspired me.

  2. Lindsay says:

i am in love with your dark hair…it looks so beautiful! i wasnt sure how i’d feel about seeing you as a brunette, because you make such a stunning blonde. But of course, Camille P. can pull off both.

  3. Cyndi says:

HappyHappyJoyJoy, indeed! I like this idea a lot :-) I agree that your natural looks great, but how can you go wrong with either? May have to steal the money envelopes, as well – wish we had that sort of Tuesday…of course we’re house-bound at the moment but hoping for a big melt today – which makes me happy :-)

  4. Geneva says:

Isn’t going dark fun? I always use temporary so I can go back to my strawberry blonde in the summer.

And the fun money is totally a great idea. Although John and I have separate envelopes if you will. That way I can buy an expensive mascara and not feel bad telling him and he can go out to lunch twice a week without me tsk tsking.

Have you tried Mint.com for your budget? After four failed other budgets, we learned that is was the only one we could actually stick with because it didn’t require any work on our part.

  5. Katie says:

Chris and I just opened a “fun” savings account – how weird! We were saving routinely, but that account is NOT TO BE TOUCHED. We do have a few fun things that we are saving for, too, though. Like a new camera for the baby, a new mattress, etc. So we opened a savings account to help us save for fun things. It actually is working out pretty good, and I don’t feel guilty because I always put half of the amount I put into our savings account in there, so I know i”m still saving.

Isn’t it sad that money management has become a game to us?

  6. Camille says:

anna– Thanks! I wish you fun money in your life. Though I haven’t actually spent any yet, the anticipation is almost as good as the actual spending.

Lindsay– Seriously? You want to know the truth? You and Linsey Maxson were my inspiration. So there. If I could go as dark as YOU and still look good, I totally would. However, I think it would make me sort of emo, with my pasty white skin. This is as dark as I dare.

Cyndi– GOOD LUCK WITH GETTING A MELT! It has lifted my spirits like I never thought was possible.

Geneva– Good idea! And I’ve looked into Mint.com, even signed up at one point, but it actually scares me quite a lot. I don’t like giving someone else access to ALL my information. It seems like it’s just asking for trouble. Thus far, we’ve been able to stick to a simple budget by ourselves, but if you say you like Mint, it might get a little more oomph.

Katie– That’s a good idea, too! Save up for big fun stuff in a separate account. Good thing we’re Dave Ramsey buddies!

49 degrees is practically tropical, Camille! Hurry and go outside before the temperature drops!

  8. raygon says:

I am envious! $200 for fun money! Wow! That is my grocery budget for the month!!! And I like that you are using the cash plan and nothing beyond. Way to go woman! Trust me, that system WORKS! Love your hair. The bangs and color. And I am really loving it curly! Have I told you that a million times? I do love it! And yea for warm weather huh?!? Bring on the summer! I am ready for it now. And hurray for you and your good grades! Wow this was a long comment. I agree with Heather Pride, lets get out before this tropical weather ends. It is 42 here right now!!!

  9. Niki says:

Oh, camilly… This just warms my heart. I’m so happy to see that you are happy!

You already know what I’m happy about;)

But can I just say that your comment was exactly the response I needed. You’ve had the best comment yet. I needed to feel that excitement. Thank you!

  10. jami says:

oh I wish I was as good as you and adell to to the couponing thing. I am going to try and start.
We just don’t spend money…hardly ever. But sometimes I just can’t take it anymore, and I splerg on something. I will be the first to admit that I am a terrible budeter

  11. Anonymous says:

Sounds good, Mill. You’re doing great. I’m interested in hearing what you spend your fun money on. Soak it up now while babysitting doesn’t have to take a chunk out of it. And I concur with Lindsay; I was a bit apprehensive about the brunette idea. I have always loved you as a blonde. But, your stunning looks allow you to pull off both magnificently. They’re both good!

  12. Lauren says:

Wow, I feel famous! I am so happy you like my happy posts. Yours was delightful! I am happy about your cute brown hair and your well deserved grade! You are amazing.

I am letting you in on a little secret. The days I post the happy posts, are the days I am having a really sad day. It helps me realize the blessings in my life :)

  13. Cristin says:

Hey! You just reminded me that I need to go withdraw OUR fun money for the month. That makes me really happY!

  14. Holly Decker says:

i cant say much about the happiness of today… except that my baby is officially facing my back now (the position he must take before birth). i am hoping that this means he is eager to arrive.

  15. Loved this post. Love Love Love Love your new hair. I admire your budgeting, I have big news, and KNOW that a budget is going to be a big part of the BIG CHANGES going on in my life right now. :) I love your blog so much, and am glad that you are around, though I have to admit i like the gloomy, but Molly Misery loves company.

  16. Love Lauren

Love the hair and the streaks/highlights. sweet.
Man, I love in FL so your temps are inviting to me but cold.
Good luck witht he budget. It is very hard.

  18. jethro says:

I was happy today to make a 4foot plywood plant stand, less than happy to carry it home on the bus.
Your complexion is only pasty if it’s uneven, which it is not, otherwise, as white as you are, it’s porcelain.
Natural hair always works, with natural skin, and a smile.

  19. Granamama says:

I am happy to have a daughter like you and look forward to seeing you in a couple of months.

    MA-MA-Mama (as Preston calls Adell….)

  20. Now I feel jipped because I don’t get 10-15% off on Tuesdays. We spend so much money on food it’s ridiculous. I tried the cash thing; that lasted about a month.

And, your dark hair looks really great.
